Poise and Carriage Lesson by Grace Lee

Submitted by Grace Etsuko Lee (RSS Feed)

The following is a small portion of my lesson on Poise and Carriage:

People judge you on your posture and carriage and treat you accordingly. Proper posture and carriage will make you stand out by looking confident and intelligent. Let’s go over the standing, posture and proper sitting position.

STANDING POSITION FOR MALE AND FEMALE:

Formal Stance and Leg Position

Women:

Watching an attractive woman moving gracefully is a pleasure. It is important to become physically strong in order to move with grace. Daily exercise is the key to grace through strength.

One of the standing positions is the formal stance. Your knees should be slightly bent. Either foot can be leading (see attached picture). Stand with your chest out, shoulders back, elongate your neck and pull your stomach in. The formal stance is used while standing in front of people, waiting for introductions or taking pictures, and much more.

Men:

For males your posture will tell the other men how they will have to deal with you. You either appear strong and confident or passive and uncertain, especially you’re your first impression. Make sure you stand with power. Your knees you be slightly bent in military formal stance with your shoulders back and chest out. Stretch your neck so you are using all your height.

How To Sit Properly

Women:

You should be in a formal standing position before you begin to sit down. Feel for the front of the chair with the back of your leg. Lower yourself straight down to the edge of the chair then slide straight back. It should be done in 2 graceful motions.

Men:

Sit up straight with your shoulders squared until you have assessed the situation. You should sit back only when the atmosphere becomes relaxed and comfortable for all parties.

These are very basic tips that hopefully, most of you practice already. If you don’t, you will see how using these tips will make you feel more confident and appear that way to others. These subtle actions can change the way you are perceived and treated by others. My complete course teaches you how easy it is to make changes that will do more for your career and social life than any other single thing.
